Target intelligence / Profile preview
The *Neisseria meningitidis* group W135 capsular polysaccharide is a high-molecular-weight carbohydrate polymer that forms the outer capsule of *N. meningitidis* serogroup W135. This capsule is a critical virulence factor, enabling the bacterium to evade host immune responses. It consists of alternating units of N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) linked to galactose. Antibodies targeting this polysaccharide confer protection against infection and are the basis for conjugate vaccines.
Antibodies targeting the W135 capsular polysaccharide promote complement-mediated killing and opsonization of *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroup W135. Conjugate vaccines induce T-cell dependent immune responses, leading to long-lasting immunity.
