The Neisseria meningitidis group Y capsular polysaccharide antigen is a surface-expressed carbohydrate polymer that forms the capsule surrounding the bacterium. This capsule is a major virulence determinant, protecting the bacteria from host immune responses and facilitating invasive disease. The antigen is group-specific, meaning its structure defines serogroup Y among the 13 described N. meningitidis serogroups. It is composed of alternating sequences of D-galactose and N-acetylneuraminic acid (sialic acid). Vaccines targeting this antigen use purified or conjugated forms to induce protective immunity. Quadrivalent vaccines often include antigens from groups A, C, W, and Y.
Vaccines induce antibody production against the polysaccharide capsule, promoting opsonization and complement-mediated killing of the bacteria.
