The Neisseria meningitidis group Y polysaccharide antigen is a capsular polysaccharide found on the surface of N. meningitidis serogroup Y bacteria. This antigen is a key virulence factor, enabling the bacterium to evade host immune responses. It is composed of repeating disaccharide units of D-glucose and N-acetylneuraminic acid linked via α(2→6) linkages, with O-acetylation of the sialic acid. Antibodies targeting this polysaccharide confer immunity and are the basis for vaccines against serogroup Y meningococcal disease.
Vaccine-induced antibody production against the polysaccharide leading to opsonization and complement activation, resulting in bacterial clearance.
