Neisseria meningitidis polysaccharide serogroup Y antigen is a repeating disaccharide capsular polysaccharide composed of →6)-α-D-glucose(1→4)-α-D-N-acetylneuraminic acid(2→ linkages. The capsule is the main virulence determinant, protecting the bacterium from complement-mediated lysis and phagocytosis. Antibodies against the group Y polysaccharide are protective, and the antigen is included in multivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccines (e.g., MenACWY), which provide immunity against invasive disease caused by serogroup Y. Capsule switching via genetic exchange can affect vaccine efficacy and disease surveillance. The three-dimensional structure exposes both hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces, affecting antibody binding and specificity.
