Overview

Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A refers to a subset of the Gram-negative diplococcus bacterium Neisseria meningitidis distinguished by a specific capsular polysaccharide structure. Serogroup A has historically been responsible for large epidemics of meningococcal meningitis, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, causing acute bacterial meningitis and septicemia with high morbidity and mortality. The mainstay of prevention is vaccination, notably with the MenAfriVac vaccine. Antibiotics are used for treatment, but the serogroup type is primarily relevant for vaccination and epidemiological surveillance, not for choosing antibiotics. Serogroup A is not a classical therapeutic target like a protein or receptor, but is an important classification for public health interventions.

Mechanism of action

Vaccines (e.g., MenAfriVac) induce immunity by generating antibodies against the capsule polysaccharide of serogroup A, preventing infection. Antibiotics inhibit bacterial replication and survival (general mechanism for all Neisseria meningitidis serogroups).
