Overview

The polysaccharide capsule of *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroup A is a major virulence factor enabling immune evasion and causing invasive diseases like meningitis. It consists of repeating units of O-acetylated (α1→6)-linked N-acetyl-D-mannosamine-1-phosphate. The capsule protects the bacterium from complement-mediated lysis.
