Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B outer membrane proteins (OMPs) are a diverse group of integral and peripheral proteins embedded in or associated with the outer membrane of the bacterium. These proteins play crucial roles in bacterial physiology, pathogenesis, immune evasion, and serve as key antigens for vaccine development. Key OMPs include PorA (a major porin), PorB, LP2086/fHbp (Factor H binding protein), and NMB0315 (a metallopeptidase). They are central components of OMV-based and recombinant vaccines, eliciting bactericidal antibodies and driving protective immunity. Many OMPs show high sequence conservation within serogroup B but can exhibit antigenic variability between strains.
OMV-based vaccines elicit antibodies against multiple OMPs (e.g., PorA, PorB, fHbp), leading to complement-mediated killing of bacteria. Recombinant vaccines induce antibodies against specific OMPs like fHbp or NMB0315, promoting bactericidal activity and opsonophagocytosis.
