Overview

This target refers to the combined immunogenic components of the VA-MENGOC-BC vaccine, designed to protect against Neisseria meningitidis serogroups B and C [1, 8]. The serogroup B component consists of outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), also known as proteoliposomes, which contain a complex mixture of proteins such as PorA, PorB, and FetA, along with endogenous lipopolysaccharides that serve as both antigens and adjuvants [1, 7]. The serogroup C component is the capsular polysaccharide, specifically a polymer of alpha-2,9-linked sialic acid [10, 17]. Together, these components stimulate the immune system to produce bactericidal antibodies that facilitate the killing of meningococci through complement-mediated lysis and opsonophagocytosis [5, 6, 15]. This formulation was specifically developed to address the lack of a traditional capsular vaccine for serogroup B, whose polysaccharide mimics human neural cell adhesion molecules and is thus poorly immunogenic [10, 13]. The vaccine has been widely used in mass immunization campaigns, particularly in Latin America, to control outbreaks of invasive meningococcal disease [6, 8].
