Target intelligence / Profile preview
The polysaccharide capsule of *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroup B is a key virulence factor composed of α(2→8)-linked polysialic acid. It protects the bacterium from complement-mediated lysis and phagocytosis, enabling systemic invasion and disease. Its structural similarity to human neural cell adhesion molecules complicates vaccine development, necessitating protein-based vaccine strategies targeting other bacterial components.
Antibodies against the capsule or proteins associated with its production/presentation prevent or reduce bacterial survival and/or replication.
