Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B protein

Molecular classification
Bacterial protein, Outer membrane protein, Adhesin, Receptor, Enzyme, Secreted protein
01

Overview

Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B proteins comprise a diverse group of surface-exposed and secreted proteins critical for bacterial survival, virulence, and immune evasion. They include outer membrane proteins such as factor H-binding protein (FHbp), neisserial heparin binding antigen (NHBA), Neisseria adhesin A (NadA), and various porins. Several of these proteins serve as key antigens in serogroup B meningococcal vaccines. Other proteins are involved in adhesion, iron uptake, and complement evasion. The group is not a single molecular target, but an immunologically and clinically important collection of bacterial proteins. The term is non-specific and incorporates multiple targets with variable molecular structure and function.

Mechanism of action

Vaccines elicit antibody responses to these proteins, blocking bacterial attachment, neutralizing toxins, or promoting complement-mediated lysis

03

Biological functions

Immune evasion (e.g., capsule proteins, FHbp)Iron acquisition (e.g., transferrin-binding proteins)Cell adhesion and invasion (e.g., pilus, PorA proteins)Surface antigenicity (vaccine target)
04

Disease associations

Infection (specifically, invasive meningococcal disease such as meningitis and septicemia)
05

Safety considerations

For vaccine use: potential for autoimmune responsepoor immunogenicity against some antigens (esp. serogroup B capsule, which closely mimics human neural cell adhesion molecule)antigenic variation within proteins may allow immune escape
06

Interacting drugs

Bexsero (contains FHbp, NHBA, NadA, and outer membrane vesicles containing PorA)

07

Biomarkers

Expression levels or sequence variants of FHbp, NHBA, NadA, and PorA may be used for vaccine coverage/strain typing
