The capsular polysaccharide of *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroup C is a homopolymer composed of sialic acid (N-acetylneuraminic acid) residues linked by α(2→9) glycosidic bonds. It may be partially O-acetylated. The capsule is a major virulence factor, providing resistance against antibody/complement-mediated killing and phagocytosis. It is a key target for vaccine development. Serogroup C strains are commonly associated with invasive meningococcal disease, and vaccines targeting this capsule are widely used for prevention. Capsule switching can occur, allowing for immune evasion.
Vaccines induce antibodies that promote complement-mediated killing and opsonophagocytosis of bacteria expressing the serogroup C capsule.
