The Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C polysaccharide antigen-conjugate complex is a vaccine component designed to prevent invasive disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis, specifically targeting the serogroup C strain. This target molecule consists of the capsular polysaccharide from N. meningitidis serogroup C covalently linked (conjugated) to a carrier protein, most commonly CRM197 (a non-toxic mutant of diphtheria toxin), tetanus toxoid, or diphtheria toxoid. Conjugation to a protein carrier transforms the immune response to T-cell dependent, resulting in improved immunogenicity, especially in infants and young children. Conjugate vaccines induce immunologic memory and provide herd immunity by reducing nasopharyngeal carriage.
