Target intelligence / Profile preview
The polysaccharide capsule of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C is a major virulence factor composed of α(2→9)-linked sialic acid (N-acetylneuraminic acid) homopolymers. It protects the bacterium from complement-mediated lysis and phagocytosis, enabling systemic infection. The genes responsible for its synthesis are clustered in the cps locus. It is a key target for conjugate vaccines, which have proven effective in reducing disease incidence.
