Target intelligence / Profile preview
The Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W capsular polysaccharide is a complex carbohydrate polymer that forms the outer capsule of the bacterium. It is a major virulence factor, protecting the bacteria from phagocytosis and complement-mediated killing. The polysaccharide consists of repeating units containing sialic acid linked to galactose. It is the target of quadrivalent and conjugate vaccines, which induce immunity against multiple strains of N. meningitidis, including serogroup W. Vaccination against this polysaccharide significantly reduces the incidence of invasive meningococcal disease.
Antibody-mediated neutralization and opsonization following vaccination, leading to complement-mediated killing and phagocytosis.
