The Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W capsular polysaccharide conjugate antigen is a component of several quadrivalent meningococcal vaccines (MenACWY), which are designed to protect against invasive disease caused by four major serogroups of N. meningitidis: A, C, W, and Y. The antigen consists of the capsular polysaccharide from serogroup W chemically linked (conjugated) to a carrier protein—commonly CRM197, a non-toxic mutant of diphtheria toxin—to enhance immunogenicity. Conjugation enhances immunogenicity by inducing robust antibody production even in populations with immature immune systems (infants/young children), generating memory B cells for long-term protection and reducing nasopharyngeal carriage and thus transmission within populations.
