Neisseria meningitidis serogroup Y capsular oligosaccharide is a carbohydrate antigen found on the surface capsule of *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroup Y. This molecule is composed of repeating units of sialic acid derivatives, which allows the bacteria to evade the host immune system via molecular mimicry. It is essential both for bacterial virulence and for public health interventions, as it is the basis for serogroup classification and a key component of meningococcal vaccines. Antibodies directed against the serogroup Y oligosaccharide confer immunity by promoting killing of the bacteria and preventing invasive infection[2][5][6].
Vaccines that incorporate serogroup Y oligosaccharide elicit specific anti-Y antibody responses, activating complement-mediated killing and opsonophagocytosis; neutralization of the pathogen[6][5].
