Neisseria meningitidis serogroup Y capsular polysaccharide conjugate is a chemically modified bacterial sugar polymer derived from the outer capsule of *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroup Y. On its own, this polysaccharide elicits a poor immune memory response, especially in young children. To overcome this, the polysaccharide is covalently attached to a carrier protein (such as diphtheria toxoid, tetanus toxoid, or CRM197), forming a conjugate. The conjugated form is used as an antigen in quadrivalent meningococcal vaccines (commonly called MenACWY), which stimulate a T-cell dependent immune response and production of specific antibodies, providing protection against invasive disease caused by *N. meningitidis* serogroup Y[2][4][5]. The conjugate is not a therapeutic target itself but a preventive vaccine component.
Immunogenicity is achieved by chemically linking (conjugating) the serogroup Y capsular polysaccharide to a carrier protein (often CRM197 or tetanus toxoid), converting a weakly immunogenic polysaccharide into a T-cell dependent antigen, thus producing strong and lasting antibody responses[2][5]
