The neonatal crystallizable fragment receptor (FcRn), also known as the Brambell receptor, is a protein that plays a crucial role in the homeostasis of IgG and albumin. It mediates the transfer of maternal IgG to the fetus/neonate and protects IgG and albumin from lysosomal degradation, thus extending their half-lives. It is expressed in various cell types and tissues, including the placenta, kidney, intestine, and liver. FcRn is an important therapeutic target, particularly for autoimmune diseases, hematologic conditions, and certain kidney disorders.
Inhibition of FcRn leads to accelerated degradation of circulating pathogenic IgGs.
