Overview

Angiogenesis is the physiological process by which new blood vessels form from pre-existing vessels. This process is essential for normal development, wound healing, and reproductive functions, but it also plays a critical role in pathological conditions such as tumor growth and metastasis. It involves a tightly regulated sequence of events including endothelial cell (EC) activation, proliferation, migration, differentiation into tip and stalk cells, lumen formation, vessel maturation, and stabilization. Key molecular players include VEGF, FGF, PDGF, Angiopoietins, TGF-β, MMPs, and integrins. Targeting components of the angiogenesis pathway is a major therapeutic strategy in oncology.
