Nerve growth factor receptor associated protein 1 pseudogene

Molecular classification
Other (Pseudogene)
01

Overview

Pseudogenes, such as the nerve growth factor receptor associated protein 1 pseudogene (ENSG00000238153), are nonfunctional segments of DNA that bear significant sequence similarity to protein-coding genes but lack the capability to produce a functional protein product. This specific pseudogene is a sequence derived from the nerve growth factor receptor associated protein 1 gene, but due to disruptive mutations (e.g., frameshifts, premature stop codons), it is incapable of generating the corresponding protein. Pseudogenes can be formed by gene duplication, retrotransposition, or as remnants of previously functional genes, and may occasionally be transcribed into RNA, sometimes playing minor regulatory roles at the RNA level. However, the vast majority—including this example—are considered functionally inert and do not serve as therapeutic targets nor as biomarkers for disease monitoring or treatment selection.

02

Biological functions

Other (Generally nonfunctional; may occasionally be involved in RNA-level regulation or as competing endogenous RNA, but no established function for this pseudogene)
03

Disease associations

Other (No direct disease role established; pseudogenes rarely have defined impact, except as potential regulatory elements in rare circumstances)
