Overview

Nerve root compression refers to the physical impingement of a spinal nerve root, usually by herniated disc material, osteophytes, tumors, or inflammatory tissue. This compression disrupts axonal transport, provokes intraneural edema, and reduces microvascular blood flow, leading to symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, motor weakness, and altered sensation in the region supplied by the affected nerve root. If untreated, prolonged compression can cause irreversible nerve damage. Management targets symptomatic relief and decompression of the affected root, either by conservative, interventional, or surgical means, depending on cause and severity. In summary: "Nerve root compression" is a disease state and not a canonical molecular target. It should not be classified as a molecule, receptor, or pharmacological target for drug development or molecular characterization.

Anti-inflammatory (reducing inflammation to relieve pressure/symptoms), Analgesic (pain relief), Neurolytic procedures (radiofrequency ablation: interrupt nerve signaling for pain), Surgical decompression (physical removal of the compressive factor: discectomy, laminectomy, fusion)
