Nerve signals, also known as neurotransmission or nerve impulses, represent the electrochemical processes by which neurons communicate information. This involves the generation of action potentials through the rapid flux of ions across the axonal membrane and the subsequent release of neurotransmitters at synapses to stimulate or inhibit target cells (StatPearls, 2023; Molecular Biology of the Cell, 2002). Because 'Nerve signals' refers to a broad physiological phenomenon rather than a single molecular entity, it is considered an incorrect therapeutic target name for drug discovery purposes. Instead, pharmacological agents target specific proteins like the Sodium channel protein type 5 subunit alpha or the GABA-A receptor to modulate these signals. Dysregulation of nerve signaling is a hallmark of various conditions, including chronic pain, epilepsy, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's (Purves et al., Neuroscience, 2001). Effective therapy requires precise targeting of the underlying molecular drivers of signaling to avoid broad systemic toxicity.
Drugs do not target 'nerve signals' as a single entity; instead, they modulate specific molecular components such as voltage-gated ion channels, ligand-gated ion channels, and G-protein coupled receptors to alter the frequency, amplitude, or transmission of these signals (StatPearls, 2023).
