Overview

Nervous system development is a comprehensive biological process (GO:0007399) that governs the formation, patterning, and maturation of the central and peripheral nervous systems (Gene Ontology Database, 2024). This complex progression begins during early embryogenesis with neural induction and neurulation, continuing through stages of neurogenesis, neuronal migration, axonal pathfinding, and the establishment of synaptic connections (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2023). Because this term describes a broad sequence of physiological events rather than a single molecule, receptor, or enzyme, it is not considered a discrete therapeutic target in pharmacology. Disruptions in these developmental pathways are fundamental to the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, and various structural brain abnormalities (PubMed, PMID: 28652422). While drugs do not target the process of 'development' as a whole, numerous therapeutic agents and environmental toxins—such as valproic acid or ethanol—interfere with specific molecular components within these pathways, making the study of this process vital for identifying developmental neurotoxicity risks (EPA, 2023).
