Nervous system function modulation is a broad physiological process and therapeutic category rather than a specific molecular target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. It involves the alteration of nerve activity through the targeted delivery of stimuli—including electrical, magnetic, or chemical agents—to specific neurological sites to restore homeostasis or alleviate symptoms (International Neuromodulation Society, 2024). Dysregulation of nervous system modulation is central to various pathologies, including chronic pain, movement disorders like Parkinson's disease, and psychiatric conditions (NIH, 2023). While many drugs achieve therapeutic effects by modulating the nervous system, they do so by interacting with specific proteins like G protein-coupled receptors or ion channels, which are the actual therapeutic targets.
