Overview

Neural cell adhesion molecule 1 (NCAM1), also known as CD56, is a multifunctional glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It plays critical roles in cell adhesion, migration, signaling, and development across neural and immune systems. It exists as several isoforms (NCAM-180, NCAM-140, NCAM-120) and is widely expressed in neurons, glial cells, skeletal muscle, NK cells, T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and dendritic cells. Alterations in NCAM/CD56 expression or signaling have been linked to cognitive deficits such as schizophrenia or Alzheimer's disease, and hereditary motor sensory neuropathy (CMT).
