Overview

Neural cell adhesion molecule 2 (NCAM2) is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily and acts as a cell adhesion molecule predominantly expressed in the nervous system. It was originally identified as having high expression in the olfactory bulb, where it plays a key role in the organization and projection of primary olfactory axons. NCAM2 regulates neuronal morphogenesis, dendritic and axonal growth, synaptogenesis, and synaptic plasticity by modulating cytoskeletal dynamics and interacting with proteins such as MAP2, CaMKII, and the 14-3-3 family. These functions are essential for the proper formation and maintenance of neural circuits, memory, and learning. Altered expression or function of NCAM2 has been linked to several neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders, including autism spectrum disorder and Alzheimer's disease
