Neuraminidase A (NanA) is a sialidase enzyme produced by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. It plays a crucial role in bacterial colonization, pathogenesis, and host interaction by cleaving terminal sialic acids from host glycoconjugates. NanA promotes pneumococcal adherence to human respiratory epithelial cells and biofilm formation. Its enzymatic activity exposes underlying receptors on host tissues that facilitate further bacterial attachment and invasion. NanA upregulates pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL1β, IL8, TNF) and modulates immune responses during infection.
