Neuraminidase (NA) is a major surface glycoprotein on influenza A viruses. The N1 subtype is a class of neuraminidases present in certain strains of influenza A, such as H1N1. It functions as a sialidase, cleaving terminal sialic acid residues to facilitate the release of newly formed virions from infected cells. NA is a homotetrameric protein with each monomer consisting of approximately 470 amino acids. The active site, located in a cavity at the top of each head domain, binds Neu5Ac (sialic acid) for catalysis. NA is subject to antigenic drift, and resistance to neuraminidase inhibitors can arise through point mutations in key active site residues.
