Overview

Neurexophilin 2 is a cysteine-rich, N-glycosylated secreted glycoprotein with an N-terminal signal peptide, expressed mainly in a scattered subpopulation of neurons within the brain. It binds tightly to the extracellular domains of alpha-neurexins, likely serving as a ligand in neuronal signaling pathways. The protein undergoes several post-translational modifications, including glycosylation, and appears to be brain-specific with a possible role in modulating synaptic communication. Its gene shows species-selective expression, being prominent in cattle but not rodents. Although not a receptor or enzyme, its interaction with cell-surface proteins suggests involvement in synaptic regulation and neuropeptide signaling pathways. NXPH2 is not currently a direct therapeutic target, and there are no drugs or established biomarkers associated with it; however, its presence is linked (via genetic association studies) to certain developmental and nephrological diseases.
