Overview

Neurexophilin and PC-esterase domain family member 2 (NXPE2) is a protein encoded by the NXPE2 gene in humans, located on chromosome 11, with known aliases including FAM55B and FLJ25224. It is a predicted membrane protein with structural similarity to members of the neurexophilin and PC-esterase domain families, with 559 amino acids in its canonical transcript. NXPE2's biological function is poorly understood. In mice, it has been shown to be required (together with Glycophorin A) for forming the TER-119 epitope used to identify erythroid lineage cells, suggesting possible roles in erythropoiesis; knockout mice demonstrate viability with only slight phenotypes in fibroblast proliferation and no gross hematologic effects. NXPE2 has not been consistently detected in human or murine red blood cell proteomes and is not well-established as a therapeutic target, receptor, or clinical biomarker. There is little evidence of direct involvement in common human diseases, although it has been reported in transcriptomic profiling of gastric cancer. No drugs or drug mechanisms are currently associated with NXPE2.
