Overview

Neuritin 1 (NRN1) is a GPI-anchored neuronal protein encoded by the NRN1 gene, primarily expressed in postmitotic-differentiating neurons during development and adult brain regions involved in plasticity[1][3][6]. Its expression is regulated by neural activity and neurotrophins. The protein promotes neurite outgrowth and branching, supporting neuritogenesis and synaptic plasticity[1][6]. Overexpression of Neuritin 1 is implicated in astrocytoma progression, and it is involved in metabolic regulation within brown adipocytes[4]. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants. NRN1 is not classified as a conventional receptor or enzyme but is considered a therapeutic target due to its roles in neural and metabolic function[1][2][4][6].
