Target intelligence / Profile preview
Neurobehavioral function is a multifaceted physiological construct representing the overt manifestation of central nervous system activity through cognitive, motor, and sensory behaviors [1, 14]. It is not a specific molecular target, receptor, or enzyme, but rather a global assessment of neurological health and integrity, encompassing domains such as executive function, memory, emotion, and social interaction [3, 14]. In drug development and clinical research, neurobehavioral function serves as a critical phenotypic endpoint for evaluating the efficacy or safety of therapeutic agents, particularly those intended for neurodevelopmental, neuropsychiatric, or neurodegenerative conditions [5, 8]. While various drugs modulate neurobehavioral outcomes—often by interacting with specific molecular targets such as GABA receptors, dopamine receptors, or muscarinic receptors—the term itself describes the functional outcome of these interactions [2, 9]. Consequently, neurobehavioral function is frequently utilized in toxicology to detect adverse effects on the nervous system and in clinical trials to measure symptomatic improvement or decline [4, 11].
Not applicable; neurobehavioral function is a phenotypic endpoint rather than a molecular target. Therapeutic effects are generally mediated through the modulation of specific neurotransmitter systems, such as GABAergic, dopaminergic, and cholinergic pathways, which in turn affect the neural circuits governing behavior and cognition.
