NBPF26 is a protein rich in Olduvai domains (formerly called DUF1220), structural protein motifs that have greatly expanded in number in humans and are thought to contribute to the rapid expansion of the neocortex. The protein includes five EGF-like domains and one calcium-binding EGF-like domain, and is predicted to be located in the cytoplasm. NBPF26 interacts with other proteins including Estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1), APEX nuclease, lysine-specific demethylase 1A (KDM1A), trans-Golgi network protein 2 (TGOLN2), and tripartite motif containing 25 (TRIM25). NBPF26 is not a classical drug target and is studied primarily in the context of cancer genetics, human/primate evolution, and protein domain biology. There are no drugs known to interact directly with NBPF26, nor is it considered a biomarker or safety concern in clinical medicine at present.
