Overview

The neuroendocrine system comprises specialized neuroendocrine cells, which are distributed throughout many organs including the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, adrenal glands, pancreas (islet cells), thyroid/parathyroid glands, lungs, gastrointestinal tract mucosae among others. These cells receive neuronal input and respond by releasing hormones into circulation that regulate diverse physiological processes such as metabolism control; stress response; growth; reproductive functions; digestion; cardiovascular regulation; fluid/electrolyte balance; mood modulation. The integration between nervous signals and hormonal output allows rapid adaptation to internal/external stimuli. Dysfunction can result in various diseases—including hormone-secreting tumors known as neuroendocrine tumors, metabolic syndromes like diabetes mellitus due to pancreatic involvement or Cushing’s syndrome from adrenal overactivity—but "the neuroendocrine system" itself does not constitute a single druggable entity or therapeutic target.
