The neuroendocrine system comprises specialized neuroendocrine cells, which are distributed throughout many organs including the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, adrenal glands, pancreas (islet cells), thyroid/parathyroid glands, lungs, gastrointestinal tract mucosae among others.
