Overview

Neurohormonal regulation refers to the integrated control of physiological processes through the interaction of the nervous and endocrine systems. Specialized cells produce **neurohormones**—chemical messengers that are released by neurons into the bloodstream—to communicate signals to distant organs. This regulation maintains homeostasis and involves multiple classes of messengers, including peptides (such as oxytocin, vasopressin, and various hypothalamic releasing hormones), amino acid derivatives (like norepinephrine and dopamine), and small molecule transmitters. Neurohormonal regulation is fundamental for processes such as cardiovascular control, metabolic homeostasis, stress response, reproduction, sleep, digestion, and brain-gut interactions. Impairments in neurohormonal regulation are implicated in a variety of diseases, including cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, mood and neurodevelopmental disorders, and disturbances of gastrointestinal and sleep functions[2][3][6][1][5][9].
