Overview

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a non-invasive treatment technique in which electrical impulses are delivered via electrodes placed on the skin to induce muscle contractions. NMES is used primarily in rehabilitation settings to strengthen weakened muscles, prevent muscle atrophy, restore muscle function after neurologic injury, manage pain, improve circulation, and in specialized settings to treat dysphagia and improve swallowing function. It is a device-based therapy, not a molecular drug or receptor, and is not classified among biological therapeutic targets. While highly effective in many rehabilitation contexts, its efficacy is influenced by factors such as electrode placement, stimulation parameters, and patient compliance. NMES should not be confused with molecular targets, as it operates at the level of tissue and organ systems, not through molecular signaling pathways.
