Neuromuscular Junction Transmission (NMJ)

Target
NMJ
Molecular classification
Synapse, Cell-cell communication
01

Overview

The neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is a specialized synapse where a motor neuron communicates with a skeletal muscle fiber to control muscle contraction. It involves the release of acetylcholine (ACh) from the presynaptic terminal, binding to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) on the postsynaptic membrane, and subsequent muscle fiber depolarization leading to contraction. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) rapidly degrades ACh, terminating the signal. The NMJ is crucial for voluntary movement and is the target of various diseases and drugs.
