Neuronal Acetylcholine Receptor (nAChR)

Target
nAChR
Molecular classification
Ligand-gated ion channel, Receptor
01

Overview

Neuronal acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are ligand-gated ion channels that mediate fast synaptic transmission in the central and peripheral nervous systems. They are activated by the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and also respond to nicotine. nAChRs are pentameric proteins consisting of various combinations of α and β subunits, forming diverse subtypes with distinct pharmacological properties. They play key roles in synaptic plasticity, neurotransmitter release, cognitive functions, and are implicated in various neurological diseases, including Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, and addiction.
