The neuronal acetylcholine receptor subunit alpha-10 (nAChRα10) is a component of certain nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), ligand-gated ion channels. It forms heterooligomeric pentameric channels with the α9 subunit, creating functional α9α10 nAChRs. It is highly expressed in inner ear hair cells and involved in auditory processing. Mutations are linked to autosomal recessive deafness. Blockade or modulation may have implications for neuropathic pain management.
Nicotine blocks α9α10-containing nAChRs; Conotoxin RgIA is a selective antagonist of α9α10-containing nAChRs.
