The Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Subunit Alpha-3 (nAChRα3) is a subunit of a pentameric ligand-gated ion channel that mediates fast synaptic transmission. Upon binding of acetylcholine or other agonists, the channel opens, allowing influx of cations such as Na⁺, K⁺, and Ca²⁺, leading to neuronal depolarization and excitation. nAChRα3 is predominantly found in autonomic ganglia and adrenal medulla, and also in certain regions of the CNS. It plays a role in signal transmission from preganglionic to postganglionic neurons and is implicated in addiction mechanisms, particularly regarding ethanol. Specific subtypes of nAChRs exhibit distinct pharmacological properties.
