Neuronal Acetylcholine Receptor Subunit Alpha-6 (nAChRα6)

Target
nAChRα6
Molecular classification
Ligand-gated ion channel, Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor, Acetylcholine receptor subunit, Alpha-6 subunit
01

Overview

The neuronal acetylcholine receptor subunit alpha-6 (nAChRα6 or CHRNA6) is a subunit of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), which are ligand-gated ion channels primarily found in the nervous system. It is expressed in dopamine-releasing neurons in midbrain regions and plays critical roles in modulating dopamine release, reward-related behaviors, motor function, and addiction. Variants and altered function of CHRNA6 have been associated with nicotine dependence, alcohol dependence, cocaine dependence, bipolar disorder, dystonia, and Parkinson’s disease. Drugs targeting α6-containing nAChRs are being explored for treating addiction disorders and neurodegenerative diseases.
