Target intelligence / Profile preview
The neuronal apoptosis pathway refers to the molecular mechanisms by which neurons undergo programmed cell death (apoptosis). This process is essential during development for removing excess or dysfunctional neurons, but in mature neurons, apoptosis is tightly regulated and generally suppressed to ensure long-term survival. Dysregulation of neuronal apoptosis contributes to neurodegenerative diseases and acute brain injuries. It primarily involves the intrinsic (mitochondrial) and extrinsic (death receptor) pathways, converging on activation of executioner caspases.
