Overview

The neuronal membrane lipid bilayer is a semi-permeable, dynamic matrix composed of phospholipids, sphingolipids, and cholesterol that defines the structural boundary of neurons (Maxfield & Tabas, 2005). Beyond its role as a physical barrier, it serves as a critical regulatory environment for the function of membrane-bound proteins, including ion channels, transporters, and G protein-coupled receptors (Escribá et al., 2008). The physical state of the bilayer, characterized by its fluidity and the presence of specialized microdomains called lipid rafts, is essential for efficient synaptic transmission and signal transduction (Grassi et al., 2020). Mechanism of action

Modulation of membrane physical properties such as fluidity, thickness, and lateral pressure, which indirectly regulates the function of integral membrane proteins like ion channels and receptors (Escribá et al., 2008). It also involves the organization of lipid rafts and the provision of precursors for signaling molecules (Maxfield & Tabas, 2005).
