Neuronal membranes and inhibitory receptors refers to a broad physiological category encompassing the structural lipid bilayer of neurons and the specific protein complexes that mediate inhibitory signaling within the nervous system. The primary inhibitory receptors include the Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors and glycine receptors, which are essential for maintaining the balance between excitation and inhibition in the brain (Sigel & Steinmann, 2012; Lynch, 2004). Activation of these receptors typically leads to the hyperpolarization of the neuronal membrane, making the neuron less likely to fire an action potential (Alberts et al., 2002). This system is the primary target for a wide range of pharmacological agents, including sedatives, hypnotics, anticonvulsants, and general anesthetics, which often work by enhancing the natural inhibitory effects of neurotransmitters (Olsen & Sieghart, 2008). Because this term combines a structural component (the membrane) with a diverse group of receptor families, it is generally treated as a functional system rather than a single, specific therapeutic target in drug discovery.
Drugs targeting this system typically act as agonists or positive allosteric modulators of inhibitory receptors, such as GABA-A or GABA-B, to increase chloride influx or potassium efflux. This results in the hyperpolarization of the neuronal membrane, thereby reducing the probability of action potential firing and dampening overall neuronal excitability (Olsen & Sieghart, 2008; Sigel & Steinmann, 2012).
