The neuronal α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7 nAChR) is a ligand-gated ion channel composed of five α7 subunits. It is highly permeable to calcium ions and exhibits rapid desensitization. Expressed throughout the CNS and PNS, it modulates synaptic activity, cognitive processes, and inflammation. It is implicated in diseases like schizophrenia, Alzheimer's, and cancer, and is a target for therapeutic interventions.
