Neuronal Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Alpha3Beta4 Subtype (α3β4 nAChR)

Target
α3β4 nAChR
Molecular classification
Cys-loop ligand-gated ion channel, Receptor, Ion channel
01

Overview

The neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) alpha3beta4 subtype is a pentameric ligand-gated ion channel composed of α3 and β4 subunits. It is predominantly expressed in autonomic ganglia and certain brain regions, mediating fast synaptic transmission and modulating reward pathways. Activation of α3β4 nAChR leads to increased permeability for Na^+ and K^+ ions, resulting in rapid depolarization of postsynaptic membranes. It is implicated in nicotine dependence/addiction, representing a potential therapeutic target.
