Overview

Neuronal protection refers to a collection of cellular mechanisms and therapeutic interventions that support the survival and function of neurons during or after injury, including neurodegenerative diseases, stroke, trauma, or other forms of neurological insult[1][5]. Rather than being a single molecular entity, neuronal protection encompasses numerous pathways and proteins—including PI3K/AKT, BDNF/TrkB, MAPK/ERK, NF-κB, and others—that serve as the actual therapeutic targets in clinical and pre-clinical research focused on preventing or slowing neuronal damage[1][2][4].
