Overview

Neural regeneration is the process of regrowth or repair of nervous tissues, cells, or cellular products following injury or disease. It involves the generation of new neurons (neurogenesis), glial cells, axons, myelin sheaths, and synapses. The capacity for neural regeneration differs significantly between the peripheral nervous system (PNS), where it is more robust, and the central nervous system (CNS), where it is very limited. Therapeutic strategies aim to enhance intrinsic regenerative capacity, modulate the inhibitory CNS environment, and replace damaged cells using stem cells or reprogramming techniques.
