Neurotransmitter receptors are membrane-bound proteins located on the surface of neurons and other target cells. They mediate chemical communication in neural circuits by binding neurotransmitters and triggering changes in the target cell. Two major classes exist: ionotropic receptors (ligand-gated ion channels) and metabotropic receptors (G protein-coupled receptors). Their distribution and function are critical for normal brain function, and alterations are implicated in various neurological and psychiatric disorders.
