Target intelligence / Profile preview
Neurotransmitter release is the process by which neurons discharge chemical messengers, known as neurotransmitters, into the synaptic cleft in response to a stimulus. This event is fundamental for synaptic transmission—the communication between neurons or between a neuron and another cell type. It involves a cascade of events starting with an action potential reaching the presynaptic terminal, leading to calcium influx, vesicle mobilization, fusion, exocytosis of neurotransmitters, binding to postsynaptic receptors, and subsequent signal termination.
